St Patrick's Mental Health Services (SPMHS) is hosting a webinar to support GPs in identifying and responding to presentations of binge eating disorder.
Dr Gary Cooney, Consultant Psychiatrist in Eating Disorders with our team here in SPMHS, will present this GP Webinar, Recognising and managing binge eating disorder in primary care.
The webinar will take place on Tuesday, 15 October at 7pm.
Binge eating disorder is the most common eating disorder, yet it is the least recognised and least likely to be referred for specialist treatment. Compared to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, there is a lack of research and education on this condition, which may lead some practitioners to feel less confident in reaching a diagnosis of binge eating disorder, compared to other eating disorders.
Binge eating disorder, which is associated with higher body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), is often overshadowed by its associated physical complications (such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis), where an emphasis on physical health may obscure or distract from an understanding of relevant psychological or emotional aetiologies.
In this hour-long webinar, Dr Cooney will present a clinical overview of binge eating disorder, its features and diagnostic criteria, as well as discussion around the evidence-based effective treatments. Dr Cooney will conclude with advice on clinical screening and referral pathways to treatments.
GPs attending the webinar can submit questions in advance by emailing communications@stpatricks.ie or leave their questions for Dr Cooney during the webinar using the Q&A function on Zoom.
This webinar has been recognised for one Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point from the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP).
