About the Recovery Programme
The Recovery Programme is a day programme. It takes place over a total of 12 days, with two full days per week over a six-week period, and is aimed at people with experience of mental health difficulties whose illness does not require treatment in an inpatient hospital setting.
The programme focuses on working with service users to create their own Wellness and Recovery Action Plan®. The Wellness and Recovery Action Plan® is an educational tool and self-management plan that promotes higher levels of wellness, stability and quality of life. The plan does not replace other treatments, but rather is intended to be used as a complement to other treatment options and to support those who are in recovery from the acute phase of their illness.
The Wellness and Recovery Action Plan® supports someone who is experiencing a mental health difficulty to identify warning signs, triggers and stressors as early as possible so that they can take appropriate actions to reduce, modify or eliminate signs and symptoms, and often prevent them from escalating into a crisis.
Format of programme
The programme runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays online through Microsoft Teams (MS Teams). During each group session, programme attendees work on a different section of the Wellness and Recovery Plan®, so that, by day 12 of the programme, service users have their own personalised plan to suit them.
The Recovery Programme incorporating WRAP® is delivered as one segment, with a multidisciplinary team approach, including weekly input from a social worker and an occupational therapist. The social worker and occupational therapist facilitate groups on goal-setting, motivation to change, self and relationships, self-esteem, building social supports and enhancing general health.
There are a number of single groups also included as part of the programme, with input from other mental health disciplines, including a dietitian to explore the relationship between mood and food and the food pyramid, and a pharmacist to discuss all aspects of medication.
The programme also includes a session with a WRAP® advocate who shares how they use WRAP® to manage their mental health and the role it plays in their recovery journey, as well as sessions from our Information Centre team, where topics around stigma and its challenges are covered, as well as information regarding supports that are available.
The WRAP® segment of the Recovery Programme is facilitated by accredited, advanced level WRAP® facilitators who were trained by the Copeland Centre in the United States.
On completing the Recovery Programme, service users have access to a follow-up support programme, Connections Café, which runs monthly on Thursday evenings through MS Teams. Each session is thematic, based on WRAP® principles, and offers ongoing support for the service user.
GP referrals
Patients do not need to be under the care of an SPMHS consultant to be referred to the Recovery Programme incorporating WRAP®. If referring a service user to a day programme, the service user must have a diagnosis or history of a mental health difficulty.
Please note that the referrer retains clinical responsibility for the service user while they are attending a SPMHS day programme.
For information about referring patients to the Recovery Programme or any day programme, please contact our Referral and Assessment Service by emailing referrals@stpatsmail.com or phoning 01 249 3635.
